This time of year is all about resolutions, new starts, life changes.  Have you made resolutions in the past that you have been able to keep?  If so, how were you able to make them successful?  I have found that resolutions without a strong intention behind them are difficult to keep.  Most resolutions require huge lifestyle changes and commitment to make them hold. I have found that it is much more manageable to break down the resolution into smaller changes that result in a positive change in habits. For instance, many people make it their resolution to lose weight. I believe that successful and maintained weight loss requires changes in at least 3 different categories:  diet, exercise and stress reduction.  Each of those categories in of themselves can be great undertakings.  Break them down even smaller and work on something small in each area.  Stress reduction is a great place to start.  Stress can trigger the body to produce the hormone Cortisol which can be responsible for weight gain, especially around the middle and even make it very difficult to shed weight when you are doing everything else right.   Do something just for yourself every day.  Make your bath a sanctuary by lighting candles, playing relaxing music and using pure essential oil aromatherapy to facilitate deep relaxation.  Host a Self Indulgence spa retreat to learn more ideas on how to create a stress releasing lifestyle.

As for diet, start by making sure you create a healthy habit around eating breakfast.  Every morning I fix myself a healthy, yummy sautéed veggie and egg white scramble. I even added shrimp this morning to celebrate the New Year.  Chop your veggies and keep them in a zip lock ahead of time to make it easy to just cook your breakfast up when you are in a hurry.  Make sure to have healthy snacks with you at all times.  Nuts, cut veggies and jerky are things you can have to snack on every 2-3 hours. Protein supplement foods are also a great way to get the proper amount of protein without feeling that you are depriving yourself. Some of my favorites are the chocolate mint crunch bars and cappuccino mix from Take Shape for Life that can be found here http://www.healthin12.com.  You can also find some more great tips for weight loss here.

When you think about your well being, it really is circular.  Reduce stress and you are healthier, happier and have an easier time creating and maintaining all areas of wellness.  Eating healthier and exercise helps you reduce and release stress easier.  Small changes in one area can help you create changes in all areas.

Here’s to a healthy and happy 2012!
